Three heavenly Heucheroids chosen by plant hunter Lark Hanham

I’ve selected three Heucheroids that display striking leaf patterns and enhanced flowering longevity. Heucheras and Tiarellas are appropriately paired because they thrive in similar shady locations with moist, well-drained soil. Heucherellas – a unique a hybrid of the two – exhibit the showy leaves of the Heuchera and the excellent flowering capabilities of the fragrant Tiarella. Average height 30cm.

Tiarella ‘Oregon trial’ - Trailing foam flower

Tiarella Oregon Trail

Producing neat mounds of deeply lobed foliage, this vigorous, versatile variety provides ornamental ground cover. Situate at the front of a shady border or admire its rapid growth as a perennial hanging-basket specimen, where its handsome trailing habit can really shine. This perennial provides early interest from its fragrant flowers, which continue into May. Spread 90cm.

Heucherella 'Sweet Tea' (PBR) - Foamy Bells

This __garden worthy hybrid has inherited all the best traits from both of its parents. Intricately marked with vivid maroon blotches, the semi-evergreen leaves change colour throughout the year, adding additional interest and variety to any pot. From June to August the delicate sprays of bell-shaped white flowers appear. Spread 40cm.

Heuchera 'Glitter' (PBR) - Coral Bells

Heuchera Glitter

Its evergreen foliage provides all-year-round interest and its mesmerising markings are ultra-fashionable. Pops of silver mirror-like segments glint against precise, black veins of each leaf and the undersides offer a contrasting mauve. It’s readily acclaimed for its floriferous nature and later blooming time – from July to September. Spread 40cm.

Viola labradorica photo by Neil Bromhall

Viola labradorica

Why

Small and perfectly formed, it makes up for its size with an incredibly hardy, reliable habit. Every spring its fragrant blooms arrive with a flurry of excitement, signalling the arrival of spring. The violet blooms appear above purple-blushed leaves, which continue to flower into October.

Where

Violas make a valuable addition to any pot and will happily thrive in the darkest of shade. They are suited to being grown at the base of trees and under shrubs, where they can poke up from the soil in neat tufts.

How

Deadhead spent blooms to encourage blooming well into autumn. Can sometimes struggle with downy mildew, which should be controlled by removing affected leaves and treating with a fungicide product in early summer.

Works well with…

Perfect in an informal woodland setting teamed with Pulmonaria Blue Ensign and Narcissus Minnow, which will provide a striking contrast. Over time, they will self-seed. Height and spread 25cm.
