For party wines and bargain bottles, Morrisons is a cut above

Which major store scooped the coveted best supermarket wine award at this year’s International Wine Challenge? And last year? The answer is Morrisons, which may come as a surprise.

Actually, it wasn’t a bolt from the blue to some wine watchers, as Morrisons has been improving its selection steadily for some time now.

It includes some true bargains.

Morrison’s own sprightly Cava Rosado 2014, Spain (£7 down to £6.50 until 1 January) is a nicely dry, red-cherryish pink pop, while Wm Morrison Fiano 2015, a Sicilian snip at just £6, is juicy with refreshing lime and satsuma.

Add this vivacious Spanish red and you’ve got your party pack: Caliente Rojo Tempranillo 2014, Campo de Borja, Spain, is a lively, bright red to snap up (quick!) on a great offer. Red berries and a note of mocha – a crowd pleaser at a party, or partner it with pork or lamb chops. £7, down to £5 until the end of 6 November....
