The last thing centuries-old vampire Bryce Denahli expects during a routine night at Hot Encounters is to get arrested. He’s even more surprised when the sexy, straight police detective turns out to be his mate. Bryce has been alone for a long time, and he doesn’t care what the law says about stalking...the man is his!

In all his life, Lucas Ford has never had romantic feelings towards a man. But after one meeting with a certain vampire, he can’t get the man out of his head. It doesn’t help that Bryce keeps showing up everywhere Lucas goes. Unable to fight the feelings, Lucas tracks down Bryce and puts the man’s life in danger with his actions.

With bodies piling up around the city due to rogue vampires moving in, the last thing Lucas needs is a complicated love life. Can Lucas reconcile his thoughts and feelings towards another man before it’s too late?

Book Review

As short and fun as the first volume, with quite a bit of testosterone-driven stubbornness thrown in for good measure, this sequel to 'Frankie's Vamp' is the story of over 400-year-old vampire Bryce. Bryce is the second-in-command of Merrick (from book one) and can’t believe he finally found his mate when he encounters Lucas, a cop hunting the rogue vampires who have been flooding the city. There is only one problem: Lucas isn't gay and wants nothing to do with Bryce. As a result, the men, mainly Lucas, struggle, fight, and battle it out before they finally manage to find their way. Not that either one of them really changes, and that, like in the first book, was part of the fun for me in this short novella.

Bryce has lived for a very long time, has been friends with Merrick for centuries, and is more than a little envious that Merrick has found his mate and Bryce is still alone. When they do meet, and Lucas turns away in disgust, Bryce is devastated. Never mind the fact he accidentally mated them, so now their lives are connected and if he doesn’t get to drink from Lucas, he will die. And so will Lucas. Interestingly, Bryce is not the aggressive type, and while he is stubborn and will stand up for himself, he doesn’t go after Lucas. Mostly it is guilt, I suspect. I did enjoy this slight role reversal.

Lucas is a cop, the detective in charge of solving the murders the rogue vampires have caused. He was attacked by one such rogue himself and bears the scars to as how it, so he is personally involved as well as professionally. He does notice something strange when he runs into Bryce for the first time, but vehemently denies he feels any attraction He keeps telling himself he is not gay, tries to sleep with a few women, but can’t. Utterly frustrated, he finally goes to see Bryce only to end up mated to him without his knowledge. It takes Merrick to alert him to the fact that Bryce is dying. Despite all his resistance, he isn’t willing to let the vampire give up on life, and embarks on the adventure of building a relationship.

If you like your vampire stories with all the traditional ingredients (lust, hot sex, and strong wills clashing), but you don’t want a story filled with too many clichés, give this one a try. If you enjoy stories about tough men battling it out, if you like reading stories with a hint of mystery and what looks like several serial killers on the loose, and if you're looking for a read that is hot and filled with tension, then you will probably like this novella.
